Beckhill House

Beckhill House opened in the Autumn Term and now has a range of services working there together for the benefit of the local community and our families – Youth Services, Health, Attendance, Police, and Social Care etc.

Monday Club

We recognise the importance of interaction between different age groups within the community and therefore offer a Monday Club to senior citizens who enjoy being with young people on a regular basis. The current members are Mary Walker, Jean Barker and Gwen Bray. They have been involved for a number of years, ranging from 4 to 7. They attend in all weathers giving not just their time but a real commitment which means so much to our young people. We are always on the lookout for new members from the community.

Reading Matters

Reading Matters has a strong and well supported network of Volunteers who work within schools. Volunteers come from the community and workplace and are placed in our network of partner schools. Volunteers receive in depth training and gain huge satisfaction and reward from helping to support young people.
Although Reading Matters does not directly manage volunteers in every area of the UK, we are happy to support individuals and business by offering training programmes and by ‘brokering’ relationships with schools in your local area and helping to set up and support local partnerships.
This is an accredited, in depth training course that provides individuals with the practical skills to help struggling and reluctant readers within schools. Participants gain huge satisfaction from the knowledge that they are helping to support and inspire young people by improving their reading skills and self confidence.
Adult volunteers are recruited from the general public; from all walks of life, from all sections of the community and across all ages. What they all share is a love of reading and the time, patience and desire to improve the lives of young people in a fun and practical way.
Here at Carr Manor High School, we have eight Volunteers who support pupils with their reading.
Jenny Holmes, a volunteer at Carr Manor High School for over nine years, has had the pleasure of supporting pupils with their reading, in the process helping them to gain confidence to read aloud in class and helping to raise their self esteem.

Partners in school

We regularly use the support of other external services (such as SHACA, BHI, Engage, Lighthouse Project) and have piloted a project about Domestic Violence and established a support group for our young carers. Other groups and organisations that have supported the school last year include the Inter-Agency Group, Leeds Met, the OAP Club and Tracker project. We are the most well used PFI school for community use – Punjabi classes, Music school, Basketball Academy to name just a few.

Wider Community

Our children interact well with the local community and we have received positive feedback about how our children have helped people and been positive ambassadors for the school – the day trip to the seaside with a group of local OAPs was a particular highlight. We also have strong and effective partnerships with local primary schools through our visits and through the NEtWORKS cluster. Equally, CMHS Chairs the North East Area Inclusion Partnership, which is a robust partnership of Secondary Heads that have developed resources and strategies across the North East. Last year we also become a Lead School in the Healthy Schools Initiative 2010 -2013 – offering external support to other high/primary schools around the healthy schools agenda (particularly focusing on obesity, teenage pregnancy, emotional health and wellbeing and drugs/alcohol). Our work with Colleges also continues to be strength, with many of our pupils receiving awards at the annual ceremony again last year.
